How to Use Desmos on Digital SAT Math

The Digital SAT includes a built-in Desmos graphing calculator you can use on every Math question. Used well, it turns hard algebra problems into a few clicks. Used carelessly, it wastes time you do not have. The skill is knowing which questions reward the calculator and which are faster by hand.

Graphing equations

The most powerful Desmos move is simply typing an equation and reading the graph. For questions about zeros, y-intercepts, vertices, or where a function is positive or negative, the graph gives you the answer visually — no factoring or completing the square required. When a question describes a curve, graph it first and look.

Finding intersections

Systems of equations are where Desmos saves the most time. Enter both equations, and Desmos plots them; click the intersection point and it shows the exact coordinates. This replaces substitution and elimination for many questions and removes the arithmetic mistakes those methods invite.

Checking your solutions

Even when you solve a problem by hand, Desmos is a fast way to confirm the answer. Graph the original equation, or plug your solution back in, and verify it lands where you expect. On a timed test, a five-second check can catch a careless error that would otherwise cost you a point.

Testing answer choices

When a question gives four numeric or expression choices, you can often test them directly instead of solving forward. Type each candidate into Desmos and see which one satisfies the equation or matches the graph. Back-solving from the choices is frequently faster than deriving the answer, especially on messy problems.

Using tables

Desmos supports tables, which help with data questions and with checking whether a function passes through specific points. You can enter a set of x-values and read off the corresponding outputs, or plot data points to spot a linear or exponential pattern quickly.

Using sliders to explore parameters

Desmos lets you define a variable as a slider — for example, type y = ax + b and Desmos creates sliders for a and b. This is useful on questions that ask how changing a constant affects a graph, or when matching a graph to an equation from the choices. Drag the slider and watch the curve move; the answer is often immediately obvious.

When algebra is faster

Desmos is not always the answer. For simple arithmetic, one-step linear equations, or questions built on a formula you have memorized, doing the math by hand is quicker than typing into the calculator and interpreting a graph. Reaching for Desmos on trivial questions is a common time sink. Ask yourself whether the graph will actually save steps before you open it.

Avoiding common mistakes

Watch your window: if a graph looks empty, zoom out — the relevant part may be off screen. Mind your syntax, since a misplaced parenthesis produces a wrong graph that looks convincing. And do not let Desmos become a crutch that replaces understanding; the calculator is fastest when you already know what you are looking for.
